Adhering to the Correct Outlook on Human Rights to Promote Sound Development of the International Human Rights Cause

Department of International Organizations and Conferences, MFA of China

The underlying principles in human rights contained in the guidelines of the Third Plenary Session of the 20th CPC Central Committee embody the Chinese solution to the contemporary issue of human rights protection, and provide a new alternative for the vast number of developing countries to independently explore their paths of human rights development with their distinctive features. China will take an active and constructive part in international cooperation on human rights, and continue making new and greater contributions to the sound development of the global human rights cause.

The Three Global Initiatives and the Reform and Construction of the Global Governance System

  Yu Jiang

Today, our world, our times, and our history are changing in ways unlike ever before. As a responsible major country, China adheres to the principle of achieving shared growth through discussion and collaboration when participating in global governance and pursues a community with a shared future for mankind. The Global Development Initiative, the Global Security Initiative, and the Global Civilization Initiative are China’s proposals for handling challenges facing the global governance system, facilitating an equal and orderly multipolar world, and advancing a universally beneficial and inclusive economic globalization.

The Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence: Connotations in International Law and Contemporary Relevance

  Huang Huikang & Bai Xiaohang

The year 2024 marks the 70th anniversary of the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence initiated by China. As an anchor foreign policy of New China and its first contribution of public product for the international community, the Five Principles have made a historic contribution to the building of a new type of just and equitable international relations, advancing the purposes and principles of the Charter of the United Nations, and becoming universally applicable basic norms for international relations and key fundamental principles of international law.

Evolution and Prospects of Russia’s “Turn to the East”

  Li Ziguo

With the escalation of the Ukraine crisis, Russia’s policy of “Turn to the East” has evolved into “Turn to the Non-West” at an accelerated pace. Involving both a shift of focus in diplomacy and economics and the “de-Westernization” in financial and ideological areas, it has become a strategy to break through Western diplomatic and economic blockade. The transition will continue in the medium term, but adjustments or twists and turns are likely under the influence of internal and external factors.

The US-Philippines Special Relationship Revitalized: Motivations, Implications, and Constraints

  Liu Aming

US-Philippines relations have been rapidly strengthened since Marcos Jr. became Philippine President. The strong revitalization of the special relationship based on traditional ties has not only had an impact on regional security hotspots, but also profoundly stirred up the security situation in the Asia-Pacific, especially in the context of intensified China-US strategic rivalry. However, prospects of the revitalization remain uncertain given, among others, the variables in domestic politics and the emergence of a “special dilemma” within the alliance.

Economic Security and Japan’s Economic Diplomacy Strategy in Southeast Asia

  Zhou Shengsheng

Japan is increasingly emphasizing its economic security strategy and has included shaping and maintaining economic rules and order in its newly revised national security strategy. It is carrying out economic diplomacy in Southeast Asia through maintaining the economic influence of the Japan-US alliance, weakening China’s economic influence, and shaping Japan’s strategic autonomy. However, there are notable difficulties reconciling some contradictions in Japan’s diplomatic drives, as its strategic capacity may be insufficient to maintain balanced relations among China, the United States and ASEAN.

The Adjustment of NATO’s Space Policy and Its Implications

  He Qisong

Under the US leadership, NATO has been adjusting its space policy and strengthening its space deterrence capabilities to address the so-called “threat” from China and Russia. While the deterrent effect of NATO’s space policy remains to be seen, the various measures taken to implement the policy will have a considerable impact on the global space landscape, accelerating the weaponization of space and making it more difficult to prevent an arms race in space and govern space security.
