On February 4, CIIS and FLACSO jointly held a webinar on “Central America from China’s Perspective”. CIIS President Xu Bu, FLACSO President Roberto Rodríguez, Chinese Ambassador to El Salvador Ou Jianhong and UN Resident Coordinator in El Salvador Birgit Gerstenberg addressed the opening ceremony. Executive Vice President of CIIS Ruan Zongze and Chief Researcher of FLACSO Alexander Segovia presided over the webinar.

Honorary Member of CASS Xu Shicheng, Deputy Director of the Institute of Latin America Studies of CASS Yuan Dongzhen, Chairman of the Ibero-America Division of the Western Returned Scholars Association of China Wang Weihua, Director of the Center for Latin American Studies at Shanghai University Jiang Shixue, Secretary-General of the Center for Latin America Studies at Peking University Dong Jingsheng, Director of the Department of Latin American and Caribbean Studies Song Junying and other Chinese scholars attended the webinar and delivered speeches. The participants carried out in-depth discussions on China’s understanding of Central America, Central America’s modernization, current situation and regional integration, and relations between China and Central America and between the US and Central America.

President Xu Bu pointed out that with the China-Latin America relations entering a new stage of comprehensive development, the cooperation between China and Central America has entered a fast track. Since 2020, in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic, China and Central America have offered assistance to each other and conducted all-round cooperation against COVID-19. 2021 is a year with historical significance for China and Central America. Both sides should work together to open a new era for China-Central America cooperation. President Xu also emphasized that think tanks have always been important participants in China-Latin America and China-Central America cooperation and hoped to see more exchanges and cooperation between CIIS and think tanks in Latin America.

Scholars from Latin America noted that China’s view is crucial for observing and solving Central American problems. They hoped that more exchanges between think tanks can be carried out, so as to deepen their understanding of China and further promote China-Central America cooperation.
