The Department for International and Strategic Studies of CIIS aims to gain bird's views of international relations, focusing primarily on international structure, international order, big power relations, geo-politics issues, globalization as well as China's relationship with outside world. It tries to capture new trends in international affairs and producing in-depth policy analysis. Theoretical explanation of China's foreign policy is also high on the research agenda of the Department.
