The CIIS Library
CIIS Library is the leading professional library in China pertaining to international studies. Its main function is to collect and stockpile doucuments and reference materials for research work in CIIS, and also offers reference and consultation service to the general public.
The library was established in 1956, just the same year as the founding of the institute, but its collection dates to the early 1920s, when it found its origin in the library of China Political Science Association. It later expanded by taking over collections from the libraries of the Foreign Ministry of Kuomintang government, Shenyang South Manchurian Railway, and other agencies. The collection has enjoyed a history of nearly 90 years.
At present, the library has built up a total collection of over 250,000 volumes in Chinese, English, French, Russian, German, Japanese, and Spanish, half of which are in English. The collection covers a wide range of subjects relating to polictics, economy, military, foreign policy, and international law, etc. prioritizing on international relations, international organizations, diplomatic documents, international treaties and legal doucuments.
One of the most important features is that the librardy holds more than 30,000 copies of reference materials, and most importantly there are a complete and continuous run of diplomatic documents, international treaties and conventions, and yearbooks. Most of the items are collected from their first issue to the present. These include complete sets of Encyclopedia Britannica, Foreign Relation of the United States, American Foreign Relations; a Documentary Record, Public Papers of the President of the United States, Congressional Record, ДокументывнешнейполитикиCCCP.T., Documents Diplomatiques Francias, Documents on German Foreign Policy,日本外交文書デジタルアーカイブ, League of Nations Treaty Series, UN Treaty Series, Hertslets China Treaties, British and Foreign States Papers, Keesing’s Contemporary Archives, Facts on File, The Statesmen’s Yearbook, The European World Yearbook, International Trade Statistics Yearbook, International Who’s Who, Current Biography, Cumulative Book Index, The Foreign Affairs Bibliography, Monthly Catalog of U.S. Government Publications, New York Times Index, The Times Index.
The library also holds more than 400 kinds of periodicals and newspapers covering broad range in Chinese, English, French, Russian, German, Japanese, Spanish, etc. It subscribes to about 150 different kinds of foreign newspapers and periodicals and 150 Chinese ones each year. Most of them are collected with earlier editions and copies, such as Foreign Affairs, Newsweek, Time, Economist, U.S. News and World Report, Fortune(International ed.), Business Week(International ed.), The New York Times(City ed.), The Times(Late London Air ed.), International Legal Materials, etc.
Furthermore, the Library has a unique collection of precious earlier versions of international atlas, such as The Times Atlas of the World, National Geographic Atlas of the World, The International Atlas, Philips’ International Atlas, The Royal Atlas of Modern Geography, etc.
The collection is managed and controlled through a computer network, by which books and journals are catalogued, searched and retrieved. All these search tools are conveniently available to readers for access to books and data-processing facilities at the library.
Owing to the rich and valuabe collection, the CIIS Library enjoys high reputation in the fields of international studies in China. The Library provides a range of services for the members of CIIS and the staff in MFA. It also offers reference and consultation service to researchers and graduate students from the other instiutues and universities of China. Meanwhile, the library provides limited service to the foreign scholars and students.
