Asia MediationRetreat 2018 Held in Beijing

    The Asia Mediation Retreat, co-hosted by the China Institute of International Studies (CIIS), the Center for Humanitarian Dialogue (HD) and the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs was held in Beijing on October 16-17. Minister of Norwegian Foreign Affairs H.E. Ine Eriksen Søreide, attended the meeting and gave the keynote speech. Ruan Zongze, Executive Vice President of CIIS and David Harland, Executive Director of HD spoke on the opening plenary. Amb. Ma Zhengang was specially invited to give the lunchtime lecture about the Belt and Road Initiative and regional peace and security. The participants held open-minded and in-depth discussions about peacemaking opportunities and challenges in Asia, Myanmar’s path to peace and reconciliation, Afghanistan: the way forward, and forging peace on the Korean Peninsula.

    Over 60 officials and scholars from China and around the world attended the conference. Representatives from the Department of European Affairs and Policy Planning Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China, CIIS, CSCAP, CASS, AMS and YASS, Norway, the U.S., Russia, Germany, Australia, New Zealand, Switzerland, Indonesia, Thailand, the Philippines, Myanmar, Vietnam, Pakistan and Sri Lanka as well as global international organizations participated.

The Asia Mediation Retreat is a unique opportunity for mediators, high-level decision makers and other major actors in peace processes to share their experiences, identify challenges and reflect on the practice of conflict mediation in a discrete and informal setting.

The Asia Mediation Retreat is part of the Oslo Forum series, which also features an annual gathering of mediation experts and practitioners in Norway.

CIIS co-hosted the first Aisa Mediation Retreat with MFA Norway and HD in 2008. Now after 10 years, AMR jointly organised by three sides take place in Beijing the second time.
