Workshop on the Report “the 21st CenturyMaritime Silk Road: Security Implications and Ways Forward for the European Union” Held inBeijing CIIS

On September 5, 2018, Department for European Studies of CIIS and “Belt and Road” Research Centre co-hosted the workshop on the reportthe 21st Century Maritime Silk Road: Security Implications and Ways Forward for the European Union”. Officers and experts from National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA), Chinese Academy of Social Science (CASS) and CIIS attended the workshop. Mr. Rong Ying, Vice President of CIIS and the Director of “Belt and Road” Research Centre delivered the opening remarks.

Experts from Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) introduced the main points of the report “the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road: Security Implications and Ways Forward for the European Union” which will be published recently.

Chinese participants discussed the viewpoints of SIPRI’s experts and the report, correcting and clarifying some of the wrong judgments of the European experts.

Europe is the main direction of the Belt and Road Initiative. The seminar is helpful to enhance the think-tank communication between China and Europe and conducive to mutual understanding and pragmatic cooperation.
